Seattle-based artist Stan Snow impresses across his new album Road to the Sun, blending rock, prog, and Americana with symphonic arrangements. Opening track “River of No Return,” alongside highlights like “Prism” and “Stay in the Light,” features backing from the Budapest Scoring Orchestra. Lyrically, the collection bolsters its wide-ranging instrumentation with reflective themes of unity, redemption, and personal growth.
The opening track, “River of No Return,” showcases Snow’s dynamic, heartfelt sound. Shimmering strings meld with soaring, twangy guitars, resulting in a sound lovably reminiscent of Electric Light Orchestra. The orchestral-touched rock sound then shifts to a piano-led soulfulness, traversing into a prog-rock feel as the track continues, stirring in its thematic yearning for unity: “Find a way to bring it together / Heal the wounds that tear us apart.” The shifts between sophisti-pop keys and rousing guitar tones are particularly affecting. The ensuing track, “Prism,” embraces a folk warmth initially, riding on acoustic guitar before expanding into a lovely rock and folk cohesion, with shades of Steely Dan in its moody musicianship and lyrical introspection.
Another standout release, “Stay in the Light” also delights in its eclectic sound. A classic-rock familiarity shines in the bursts of twangy guitar, easing in and out alongside steady acoustic strums and a powerful lead delivery; the soulful harmonic backing in the “til it burned his soul” line is fantastic, as is the subsequent brass-tinged hook: “A silver spoon can only lead you far away / From what it takes, to stay, in the light.” Impactful as well, “Dreams of a Haunted Past” struts a grooving late-night appeal, lyrically fixating on a pursuit of redemption through another person, culminating in a hopeful and affecting line: “Find a way to heal the pain / From all the broken dreams of a haunted past.” Melding strong lyricism with a colorfully diverse stylistic palette, Road to the Sun is an excellent album from Stan Snow, who also caught our ears with the album Into the Great Beyond in 2023.
