The Erly – “Finish Line” + “Hundred Dollar Bill”

Niles, Michigan-based quartet The Erly delivers timeless rock on “Finish Line” and “Hundred Dollar Bill.” Both tracks blend vintage organs, piano, and soulful guitars, exploring relationship complexities with infectious groove.

“Finish Line” delights in its shifts between expansive, rollicking fun and more bass-led introspection. Its introduction stirs in twangy guitars and organ infusions, then moving into a sturdy vocal presence, tonally reminding of Foxygen in its lovably throwback feeling. “The execution wasn’t fatal,” the vocals move alongside magnetic piano additions, then arriving into a glistening, organ-bolstered hook: “I sing ‘Who around you, is calling you up on Tuesday night?'” The production envelops in its timeless-sounding rock appeal, led by heartfelt guitar twangs, suavely dynamic vocals, and eclectic keys. Per the band, the track captures the sentiment of “if the people who matter most to you are waiting at the finish line, it’s been worth it all along.”

The more recently released “Hundred Dollar Bill” also captivates. Its organ-laden “I can laugh it out” vocal stirrings build with climactic allure. The lyricism is affecting as well, capturing the complexities of a defunct relationship that refuses to end. Both partners fight, apologize, and get a quick dopamine high. But over time, those fake apologies lose their value just like cash. These relatable perspectives align with a similarly impactful arsenal of guitars, piano, and organs, excelling especially in the “there’s something I need to ask of you” bridge and in the second-half guitar solo. Both singles are wholly enjoyable standouts from the Michigan-based quartet.
