The Paradise Riflebirds – “Much Doom”

On new single “Much Doom,” The Paradise Riflebirds craft a serenely absorbing rock soundscape, where tranquil singing blends with shimmering dream-pop guitar work. The track sustains a mesmerizing, slow-burning pull, enhanced by a surreal music video filmed in Venezuela. This haunting creation marks an impressive effort from the duo of Cairns, Australia-based guitarist Simon J and Edinburgh, Scotland-based vocalist John Tulloch.

The production opens with a soothing combination of hazy vocals and dreamy guitar work, the latter fondly reminiscent of Beach House in its glistening, alluring lines. “Along the way and there again,” those vocals open with delectably lethargic appeal. Additional vocal layers emerge with spine-tingling impact upon the “should I waltz right in?” questioning, as the guitars continue to progress with steady entrancement amidst slight percussion. That “waltz” ascent re-emerges as the final minute comes into view, culminating in a delicate insertion of piano and hushed vocal refrain.

The accompanying music video (directed by Raven Strauss of Pixelate Films) matches the track’s introspective, hypnotic vibes well — visually striking in its shifts between dancing, smitten affections and daily-grind anxieties. It was shot in Caracas, Venezuela this past November, and depicts a woman in a cafĂ© watching a livestream of a couple dancing in a nearby park, with the woman dancer appearing gradually ill. Crafted by Venezuelan filmmakers, the visual seamlessly amplifies the psychological weight of this wholly memorable track from The Paradise Riflebirds.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
