TJ Manuel - 'The Iridescent Void'

Commencing the album, “Void 1” embraces a murky spaciousness. It’s easy to envision a dark stillness, visually, as the gently lulling ambient tone is gradually bolstered by shimmers of brightness, like the sun slowly casting light on a slowly awakening landscape. More simmering orchestral gorgeousness is apparent by midpoint, elegant and effervescent in its tonal disposition despite maintaining a delectably understated background. “Void 2” then embraces a more rhythmic element, inspired by Terry Riley. A trickling guitar sensation moves with hypnotic entrancement, into a blissful second half that provides a comforting sense of illumination, as the guitar trickling persists. Both the opening tracks on The Iridescent Void show a clear talent for artful structural expanses and tonal ingenuity.

Another standout, “Void 3” succeeds in its embrace of vocal elements, its wordless presences spanning from initial deep solemnity to multi-layered airiness. The variation between higher-pitched vocal prominence, like just past the six-minute mark, and deeper cathedral-like intrigue makes for a riveting listening experience. Next up, the epic “Void 4” is the release’s most expansive effort, delighting in its spacey synth tones and overall glimmering, starry-eyed quality; dreamy buzzing synths give way to glistening ambient textures, for a cinematic-friendly allure. Finale “Void 5” also immerses, featuring beautiful piano samples by KJ Song, and playing as a tranquilly inviting send-off to a stunning ambient album from TJ Manuel.
