palex – “Sanctuary”

/

A serenely affecting ambient track from palex, “Sanctuary” explores spirituality and introspection through a composition shaped by his experiences while living in a freshman dorm room, during a period of interest in spirituality and deep internal contemplation. Featured on his debut album Inner Light, the track took shape over dozens of revisions as he sought to translate his internal world into a place of personal refuge. As the artist explains: “When I finished ‘Sanctuary,’ I remember thinking, ‘I finally captured exactly what it’s like to be in my head.'”

“Sanctuary” quickly establishes itself as aptly named, ushering in a soundscape that resembles the blissfulness of childhood — playing outside with friends on a summer day, with birds chirping, and not a stress in the world. Glimmers of calming synth pads resemble the sun’s gentle kiss, emitting a relaxed swell that maintains a consistently enjoyable aura alongside the bird chirps. Even as the initial sounds of children playing fade, the audible representation of idyllic nature persists, fit for both contemplation or deep listening.

The track’s three-minute mark showcases a slowly fading-out, met by sporadic pulses of spacey, buzzy synths — like the sun peeking through occasional clouds, rather than the constant blue skies from earlier. A final synth pulse then fades into a lush finality, concluding the production with lush entrancement. A beautifully composed and scenic ambient track, “Sanctuary” is a thorough success from palex.
