Liverpool-born singer-songwriter and producer Anton Lewis brings more than a decade of songwriting into focus on his debut album Someday // Yesterday, offering a blend of folk, blues, rock, and beyond. The collection revisits songs first written in his late teens and early twenties, transforming old demos and longtime live favorites into fully realized studio recordings while preserving the personal experiences surrounding their original creation.
“Vanilla” opens the album with invigorating, eclectic allure. Sporadic doses of heavy guitar distortion and whirring synths pair with a steadily unveiling lead presence. Following “I can’t help myself,” the track launches into a more feverish rock consistency thereafter, embracing both distorted edges and jangly momentum in the bridge leading to the “should’ve kept my mouth shut” retrospections. The track is an infectious tour-de-force in its synth-touched rock appeal. Ensuing track “Someday” continues to showcase Lewis’ range, here embracing elegant strings throughout. Lyrical perspectives on bitterness align with gorgeous strings, jazzy piano, and a soaring guitar entrancement in the title-referencing melodic segment. The album delights right away in demonstrations of both raucous rock and soulful chamber-pop.
The highlights continue consistently throughout. “Lords of the Desert” fuses multi-layered harmonic harmonies, lyrically emitting aspirations and striving for independence, and an initial folk-ready contemplation. “I wanna know, see, feel the sunlight caressing my skin,” the lyrics celebrate opportunities ahead, and the ability to race through the open plains and dance at will; there’s a carpe-diem revelry that shines throughout this gem. A similar push to value time and opportunity shows on “New Year’s Eve,” pondering where the time has gone amidst a rollicking piano-complemented croon, urging “let’s get this year right” as jubilant guitar twangs star alongside anthemic lead prowess.
