Chicago-based producer Randy Nieto launches his solo project Inverted Mirror with “Automatic Earth,” a rhythmically engaging electronic piece that pairs warped synth textures with a distinctly nostalgic sensibility. Informed by the genre-crossing spirit of ’90s and early-2000s music, Nieto’s sound balances experimental electronics with quirky, pop-minded structure, building on years spent within both indie-rock and electronic creativity.
A head-nodding percussive playfulness meets sporadic, spacey synth warmth as the track’s gripping soundscape unveils. Trickling synths emerge with a steady energy alongside, melding with the caressingly intermittent pad for a wholly compelling blend that is both hypnotically absorbing and infectiously replay-inducing. The percussion fades momentarily around midpoint, where a free-flowing bass resonance and bubbly, aquatic-friendly sound effects pair with the ongoing electronic elements. The percussion re-incorporates seamlessly thereafter, carrying into a lovely second half that artfully fuses heady synths and intoxicating rhythms.
Overall, the aesthetic is a riveting combination of nostalgia and modernity, resembling spaciously atmospheric haunts akin to Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin, while also retaining the rhythmically hypnotic edge of Black Moth Super Rainbow. Nieto’s past music experiences contribute to the overall mold, both growing up as a ’90s kid in love with music and as an artist himself with multiple acts — with indie rock band Maradona for seven years, and then with electronic act Belmont and Clark. “Automatic Earth” is a wonderfully immersive electronic success from Randy Nieto.
