Mingo Drive – “Strange Happenings”

“Strange Happenings” is a compelling alt-rock single from Tulsa-based trio Mingo Drive, capturing the unsettling realization that the world feels increasingly odd. Formed in 2024 by childhood friends, the band combines escalating guitars and intense drums with anthemic songwriting, building a sound that carries both atmospheric intrigue and a weighty punch. It’s also a track that received a rousing crowd reaction when Mingo Drive played it at a sold-out show with Third Eye Blind at Cain’s Ballroom.

A fervent title-touting proclamation opens the track, followed by galloping rhythms and a punchy combo of frolicking guitar jangles and whirring eeriness. Thumping percussion and sporadic guitar pulses follow, combining with a debonair lead presence in reminding of Depeche Mode’s more rock-oriented efforts. The delectably haunting “strange happenings” hook ensues; the multi-layered, anthemic delivery builds to an ardent refrain past the one-minute mark, fully conveying the sense that a tumult-filled world feels stranger than ever.

“is anyone coming to save me?” the phrasing asks during another chorus at midpoint, balancing a hypnotic allure in the repetition with thunderous rhythms and resonant heaviness. The bridge thereafter is delightful as well, with intermingling twinkling keys and sharp guitar twangs building to an eruption of distortion, melodic and fierce in its tonal unveiling. The finale then moves to an electro-touched vibe, exemplifying the project’s eclectic range as the excellent “Strange Happenings” artfully fades out; it’s a definitive success from Mingo Drive.
