A collaboration between Poems For Dead People and Intertitle, “There Are Spiders In My Dreams” melds post-punk, darkwave, and experimental electronics with foreboding spoken-word delivery, sturdy post-punk rhythms, and shadowy synth textures. Writer and vocalist Ryan Kent joins Intertitle’s electronic frameworks in an atmospheric exploration of dreams, memory, and unease.
A spacey synth pad immersion bolsters a spoken-word entrancement to start, emitting an anxiety-laden mood in its “there are spiders in my dreams” output. The debonair spoken delivery is quickly joined by a brisk electric guitar pulsation and head-nodding percussive presence, finding a lovely balance between the hypnotic elements — namely, the synths and lead phrasing — and a more rock-ready ardor. A post-punk rhythmic steadiness is apparent throughout, while the guitars artfully ease in and out of prominence, between bursting intensity, like in the approach to the two-minute mark, and more subdued envelopments.
The interplay of various synth tones does particularly well in establishing a dream-like soundscape, fitting aptly within the descriptions of visions experienced during one’s unawake hours. Its finale is especially absorbing in its gradual fade-out, the spoken presence still calmly depicting these visions as vintage-sounding synths and a propulsive rhythm section fade into the night. “There Are Spiders In My Dreams” is a captivating, atmospherically heady success of a track from Poems For Dead People and Intertitle.
