Ghost is the second release from Shadow Wave, an atmospheric instrumental EP where alternative and post-rock sensibilities meet cinematic expansiveness. Across its varied arrangements, the band balances textural guitars, keys, and immersive ambient passages with a strong emphasis on mood and gradual development.
Opening the EP, its title track consumes in showcasing the band’s evident range. Haunting, mellow keys develop with initial patience, before quickly maneuvering into sturdy percussion and a trickling electric guitar current. Gradual additions of guitar layers coalesce artfully throughout, arriving into an airy synth-laden immersion in the final segment, aptly exuding a very ghostly vibe; it’s a fantastic, atmospheric scene-setter to the EP.
Ensuing track “Drive In” embraces a folk-set beginning, with balmy acoustics joined by simmering distortion and jangly serenity. The shifts between fuzzed-out electric resonance and more shimmering, organic acoustics make for an enveloping listening experience. “Mojito” succeeds in the brisker rock realm, immediate in its pulsing guitars and bustling rhythmic edge. Debonair twangs meld wonderfully with the steady rhythm guitar, showcasing an alt-rock demeanor. Across a variety of productions, some heralded by lush keys and others acoustics and electric guitars, Ghost is an excellent EP from Shadow Wave.
