Chicago-based rockers Sun Queen ventures into heavier territory on “Calypso,” their first release since 2025 debut album Pieces and the opening single from a forthcoming sophomore album. Inspired by an imagined island refuge beyond everyday anxiety, the track balances nocturnal tension with a persistent pull toward stillness.
The track develops with absorbing momentum, from a post-punk bass solemnity to panting percussion and a riveting lead presence. “Mood shifts, heat rises, no string to guide me out,” the delivery envelops right away, complemented thereafter by stylish synth work as backing harmonic layers bolster the dreamy pop allure. “Walk me to Calypso covered dreams,” a memorable beckoning unveils here, then shifting into a guitar-fronted twanginess and ensuing feedback-touched ardor. “Calypso” develops from initial late-night intrigue to a satiating rock appeal within the “let the stars decide” phrasing, making for a definitive success from Sun Queen.
