Brisbane-based independent artist JJ Ryan blends soaring guitar-driven rock, melodic hooks, and more experimental textures on Life May Take Its Toll, a six-track EP five years in the making. Written, performed, and produced largely by Ryan in his home studio, the release brings together indie-rock immediacy, punk energy, and folk-inspired touches, with additional contributions from guest musicians on drums, cello, and spoken word.
“Time Is on Your Side” kicks off the EP, with warming guitar twangs, melodic bass, and an introspective vocal emergence. “Those who bet against the clock will be the first to die,” Ryan’s vocals resonate, with the hypnotic “I love you, I need you” smitten sentiments delighting as well. Impassioned rock vigor and dreamy textures both immerse on this standout production. Next up, “Live Wire Halo” traverses themes of isolation within a magnetic development, impactful especially around 01:30 as heavier slabs of guitar distortion drive into a ghostly vocal resonance, moving from that psych-ready allure to the “might have been a daydream” contemplation and a title-bearing rock momentum; all sequences enamor with differing dynamic pulls, capped off by soaring guitar entrancement in the final minute.
Another highlight, “Safe in the Comfort” struts a jangly rock approachability, set amidst lyrical self-analysis. “I’m safe in the knowledge that I don’t need to change at all,” the vocals quip, ruminating on “noises filling up my head / if you hear them you’ll go dead.” A midpoint synth injection interacts with the jangling guitars for a particularly hooky segment. EP finale “Don’t Ask Questions” then emerges, enveloping in both its heavier rock passages and resonant psych-pop pursuits, evident in the striking vocal layering rounding the two-minute turn. Excelling across a variety of rock realms, Life May Take Its Toll is an excellent EP from JJ Ryan.
