Golden Shoulders – “Verbatim” + “Setting Sun”

/

Could This Be The End, the new album from Golden Shoulders, released today. The band — hailing from Nevada City, CA and making music together since 2001 — crafts a lively, melodic sound. Elements of folk, sophisti-pop, and rock are throughout. “Old County” is among the highlights, with a fleeting acoustical folk feel becoming accompanied by soaring brass, bustling rhythms, and exulting vocals. Aesthetically, this track and others remind me fondly of the bands Danny Wilson and The Waterboys. My favorite on the album is “Verbatim.” In less than two minutes, the evolution from quaint folk into melodically soaring rock is seamlessly accomplished, with the “ever get the feeling?” hook showing wonderful variation. Another highlight is “Setting Sun,” where twangy guitars and a hypnotic piano melody reminds of Dr. Dog.

Stream this pleasant album on Spotify and purchase it on CD Baby.

“Verbatim” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2019’ Spotify playlist.
