A new track from Melbourne-based band Carousel Club, “Old Boy” reflects on lockdown-induced anxiety through a timeless rock sound. “Time will bring you upside down,” the vocals resonate, initially accompanied by a bass-y pulsation and later through multiple charming additions, from piano-laden spaciousness to ardent guitar-fronted escalation. The later refrain — “time will set you free,” — joins alongside a brisker, fully involved assortment of guitars, synths, and bustling rhythms. The vocals of Ryan Cornelius and Eileen Grace intertwine throughout with a seamless weightlessness, especially during the escalated second half, bringing this stellar track to a satiating close. The band, alongside producer Michael Belsar (G Flip, Hayden James, ASHYWARA), fully succeed here.

Frontman Ryan Cornelius elaborates on the track, below:

“‘Old Boy’ is about time and space circulating around us, it is about standing together as one with the people you love and supporting one another through the rollercoaster that is our day to day lives all leading to the inevitability that time will set you free.”

This track and others featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of March 2022’ Spotify playlist.
