  • Cleveland-based band @smallwoodhouse have built a sturdy reputation via acclaimed live performances, opening for acts such as Mitski, Colleen Green, and (Sandy) Alex G. They put out their debut full-length, Runner, on December 6th — and certainly the band’s live-based potential comes to full fruition here. Runner shows a creative frenzy of dreamy pop and psych-friendly rock sounds. Among the highlights is “T.V.,” where stirring vocals intermingle with playful keys and consuming guitar textures — an aesthetic reminder of Sunset Rubdown and Spencer Krug. “T.V.” is a mesmerizing success, alongside other gems like the murky organ-laden success “Familiar Hollow” and jangly guitar-based track “Sleeper.” Runner is among the most creative debuts of 2019. {Link to listen in bio}
  • We’re happy to premiere the very catchy “Heart of Elation,” a track from Evan Isaac - @streamfunk.alchemist . The Pittsburgh-based artist sports a bit of Todd Rundgren-esque charm in the vocals’ faultless alignment with the bouncy keys/synths. In terms of the synth work, with its bursting moments of variation and charisma, in alignment with the perky vocals, I’m also reminded of Of Montreal / Kevin Barnes. Regardless, Evan Isaac impresses here in various facets. There’s a flash of ominous synths, around 01:09, that plays with a mysteriously gripping allure. Elsewhere, vibrant and colorful synths mesh with escalating vocal charm, like at 01:25. I’m very excited to hear more from Evan Isaac. {Link to listen in bio}
  • @peregrinedive, the project of Felipe Javier Sanchez, impressed with the track “Fly Low” last month. The project just released the Swoon EP, further showing an integration of psych-rock and electro-pop tendencies. Among my favorites on the EP is the closing track “Why’d You Invite Me If You Know How I Get,” which develops with thunderous appeal between lusher, spacey synth-pop moments and psych-rock rhythmic hints. The vocals ascend in pitch around the one-minute mark, resulting in a gleefully contagious feel. On that track, the artist says the following: “The inspiration for this song comes from an expression in Spanish “para que me invitas si sabes como me pongo”; which translates to the title of this track. Sonically, I was influenced by listening to a lot of Legend of Zelda and combining it with doing a modern take on disco-pop.” {Link to listen in bio}
  • “Your Halo’s Bright” is a melodic track from Sydney rockers Fallon Cush, off their new album Stranger Things Have Happened. Singer/songwriter Steve Smith touts a soaring lead that meshes warmly with the pleasant guitar-driven chord changes. A twinkling bridge at the 50-second mark, with glistening guitars, builds back seamlessly into the initial guitar-pop melody. Fallon Cush show a timeless vein of rock throughout Stranger Things Have Happened, comparing to acts like Wilco in their ability to merge rock sounds of the past and present. {Link to listen in bio}
