My Ultra Violet – “Islands”

/

“Islands” is the entrancing lead single from My Ultra Violet, a new project fronted by Magic Wands singer/songwriter Dexy Valentine and collaborators Coleman Moore and Phil Galloni. Overall, the vibes remind me very much of The Church’s “Under the Milky Way” — capturing a similar sort of dreamy, jangly magic. The vocal presence and trickle of keys in the hook also reminds of Kate Bush. If it wasn’t clear by now, the band evokes some truly stirring sounds from the ’80s, though with modern production shine. “Can you feel it?” Valentine asks just before the three-minute mark, when guitar strums and vocals standalone before the track closes with expansive fervor. We certainly can feel it.

“Islands” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of May 2018’ Spotify playlist.
