Mickey Newball – “Betting On Bad Weather”

//

The debut single from Mickey Newball, “Betting On Bad Weather” consumes with moody, soulful escalation. Sweltering vocals and hazy organs lend to an aesthetic reminiscent of Father John Misty and Cass McCombs. “I’ve got everything to lose,” the artist rings out, “’cause every time a little luck comes my way, I get so nervous.” The lyrics speak to Newball’s “own unhealthy mistrust of all things good. It’s about the cautious doubt that can only be learned through repeated rejection and loss.” Crafting his music from a home studio on the California coast, Mickey Newball firmly succeeds with excellent vocal timelessness and a captivating stylistic vigor. The title-referencing conclusion is particularly engrossing, capping off a track that rewards listeners throughout.

“Betting On Bad Weather” and other memorable tracks from this month can also be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of November 2020’ Spotify playlist.

The track is also featured in the genre-based, best-of Spotify compilation Emerging Indie Soul.

  1. I’ve already contacted him and told him to keep going, as this is real talent, timeless classic pop melody…for oldsters, there is reminder of young McCartney and Paul Simon
