MOOR, the debut album from German artist Lulu on Mars, unveils a darkly consuming vein of pop — both haunting and beautiful. The uniquely impactful sound is fully conveyed on album track “Temp.” Eerie synths and cavernous bass guide into delicate vocals, the intensifying percussion evolving alongside the vocals’ ascending pitch. “Temp” thoroughly haunts, and is enjoyably indicative of the standout atmospheric and melodic qualities throughout the album.

MOOR also explores lusher, brighter territory; “bhave” enamors with serene vocals and a flickering synth-laden weightlessness, while “Sterntaler” exudes a lounge-friendly comfort with its jazzy percussion and gentle keys, the track’s “take my hand,” line being especially inviting. MOOR is a stellar debut from Lulu on Mars, representing one of year’s best albums thus far.
