Frederick, the First – “The Weirdest One”

Described as “a reflection on the worst and strangest turns of culture in recent times,” “The Weirdest One” is a blast of a track from Frederick, the First. The Minneapolis-based project of Andrew Frederick emphasizes an eclectic stylistic inspiration and fondness for clever hooks, with dashes of existentialism, introspective brooding, and witty humor.

The track’s funky guitar movements and “weirdest one,” vocal perkiness converge for a delightful effect, reminiscent in production to Of Montreal. The “gather round for story time,” vocal contrasts playful vocals with snappy suaveness, The “up is down,” vocal intensity builds to a gorgeous sigh of relief, with a gospel-tinged euphoria. “The Weirdest One” is a journey of a track that’s indeed delightfully weird, while still retaining a melodically accessible character.

The track comes via the newly released EP, The Third Ones, streaming below:

This track and others featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of June 2022’ Spotify playlist.
