SAMWOY – “Sbwriel”

///

The stylishly gripping “Sbwriel” marks the first single from SAMWOY, via the artist’s debut solo album, Awkward Party, due in early 2023. Citing inspirations like Joy Division, Iggy Pop, and Bauhaus, the artist conjures a sound that meshes suave throwback rock with darkly entrancing soundscapes, featuring consuming interplay between guitars and synths.

A clanging synth-laden bounce exudes ample nostalgia amidst haunting vocal lines like “the devil didn’t make me do it.” The track is commanding in its intoxicating aesthetic throughout. Preceded by an intriguing glistening, the erupting guitar sequence around 01:30 plays with a stylish, glam-friendly charge reminiscent of ’80s era Bowie. “Sbwriel” straddles cutting-edge innovation with blast-from-the-past nostalgia, resulting in a surefire success from SAMWOY that has me firmly anticipating Awkward Party.

This track and others featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2022’ Spotify playlist.
