Wise John – “Mr. Love”

//

“Mr. Love” is an affectionately melodic single from NYC-based artist Wise John, who recorded the effort in Brooklyn with artist Elise Trouw and producer Quinn Devlin.

A soulful ode to finding love, “Mr. Love” features a sparkling production with resonating qualities. Multiple vocal layers harmonize gorgeously, alongside saxophone additions, smooth guitar tones, and the warm accompaniment of a Hammond B3 organ. The 6-voice backing choir adds to the dynamic and expressive fervency throughout.

The track’s structural twists are abundant, evident in the first minute as peppy soul-pop drives into a sax-laden yearning prior to the one-minute turn. The “faded photograph,” sequence exudes a hooky surf-pop harmonizing appeal that builds seamlessly into the initial soulful exterior. A tranquil, lush bridge signals a tonally diverse conclusion, fitting for this melodic earworm and eclectic structural journey of a track.

Wise John first caught our ears last year with the track “Always Be the King,” via his album A Wonderful World.

This track and others featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2022’ Spotify playlist.
