Showing shades of vintage Scott Walker in its affecting croon and mystique-filled nostalgia, “Quotidian Barbarian” is the latest single from Bang Bang Jet Away. Showing a more energetic rock sound on previously featured tracks like “You Slept With My Best Friend,” the San Diego-based project provide thorough entrancement and stylistic appeal on the more subdued and mysterious “Quotidian Barbarian.”
Steady drums, eerie guitar strums, and a playful bass line complement a debonair vocal presence. “It’s awfully cold at the bottom of the sea,” they let out prior to the first expansion: “like a doctor wading through the sick ward, he treated her roughly because he could, a quotidian barbarian.” The lyrics and classic-feeling production lend a hypnotic spell, fully immersing in a sense of observational solitude amidst a striking throwback engrossment.
