Strange Souvenirs – “Slight Mod”

/

A hypnotic and textured rock sound is apparent on “Slight Mod,” the new single from Berlin-based act Strange Souvenirs. Shoegaze, post-rock, and new-wave influence are worn proudly, reflecting a sound heavy on melody and soundscape. Steady percussion and a weepy synth movement drive into crisp guitar tones, which kickstart a tour-de-force build. Warming bass injects thereafter with some funky bounciness, as the vocals enter with a debonair mystique.

“A secret temple of shame, a collection of ruses,” they relay as a string-laden accompaniment emerges with sonorous charm. The second half remains texturally gripping, particularly upon the “I know there’s something,” vocal sequence, expressing wonderment amidst the glowing array of guitars and rhythms. “Slight Mod” is another standout from Strange Souvenirs, impressing last year with the track “Beaches.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of July 2023’ Spotify playlist.
