DULCIE – “The Sunglasses Song”

/

UK singer/songwriter DULCIE’s newest single, “The Sunglasses Song,” features summery, playful lyrics akin to her previous singles “My Body” and “Medicate Me.” Clearly audible, soulful lines sashay throughout the entirety of the song. She is reflective of a new era of young singers — fusing dream and electro-pop to create a fresh, new sound, one that is less generic than pop of some previous decades.

Although at first listen it may seem surface level, lyrics like “everything looks better with my sunglasses / I’m a different person,” test the depth of the listener. Are they sunglasses, or an insightful metaphor about mental health, thematic among DULCIE’s discography?

Experiencing DULCIE’s previous single “Medicate Me” is akin to eating a popsicle on a hot summer day; the artist’s R&B vocals paired with electro-pop aim to refresh and relax the listener. Her music does just that– so much so that it was featured on Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist, among others.

DULCIE’s echoed mezzo-soprano vocals compel, stylistically similar to Dua Lipa, and cascade quickly into lushly sung lyrics revolving around the stigma on mental illness and medication. Although some lines in the song contradict its happy tune, “Medicate Me” and now “The Sunglasses Song” steer far away from brain-numbing pop lacking depth. DULCIE views music and art regarding mental illness as stereotypically melancholic and dark, and she desired to impact this topic in a positive manner. Her works aesthetically prove that finding the right medication is a blessing, not a curse.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of August 2023’ Spotify playlist.
