John X Belmonte – “Superlight”

/

A new single from NYC-based solo artist John X Belmonte, “Superlight” achieves a psychedelic electro-pop bustling with commanding atmospheric hypnotics. “I did not actually take drugs to create this song,” the artist explains. “But I was imagining what it was like to take LSD.” The result proves memorable, with shades of Depeche Mode and OMD.

“Now I’m waiting to fly,” the vocals admit amidst synth buzzing and a chilling, airy backing. This vocal line culminates in spacey synth arps and a light dose of guitars, driving into the “superlight in your mind shining through to save the night.”

The lyrics convey an anticipation for a blissful effect, as the trip takes hold; the electronic instrumentation proves fitting in its accompaniment, particularly in the final minute as additional backing textures inject a further soaring immersion. “Superlight” succeeds in its heady soundscape and trippy thematic inspirations.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of September 2023’ Spotify playlist.

We discovered this release via MusoSoup, as part of the artist’s promotional campaign.
