Mayuko – “White Heat”

/

The riveting, eclectic single “White Heat” comes via Berlin-based art-pop trio Mayuko. “‘White Heat’ is basically the description of how it feels to be caught in a panic attack,” bassist Rebecca Mauch explains. “The tension builds up until its not bearable anymore. And then it all breaks down, a flood running out until one feels very empty.”

“I need to break out,” the vocals begin, exuding a yearning for catharsis. The “let it all out,” repetition arises into a sporadic swell, with pitch-altering vocal whimsy and colorful synth touches quickly showcasing the project’s captivating production. “Get off my chest!” the vocals insist as jumpy bass and tender strings further intrigue. Haunting backing vocals and spacey synths amidst the “running,” sequence invigorates into the “it spills over the floor,” dazzling — proving wholly replay-inducing in its maneuvering with jazzy bass, flourishes of strings, and spacey synth injections.

“I feel white heat, this is white heat,” the vocals let out at that stellar two-minute turn. The imagery of over-spilling tension proves striking amidst the versatile production, melding chamber-pop, electro-pop, and jazz with artful precision.
