Basura Bath – “A Little Off the Top”

/

Canadian act Basura Bath introduces themselves with the inventive rocker “A Little Off the Top,” meshing the eclectic theatrics of Black Midi with a sturdy ’90s alt-rock nostalgia. The track is the opener on their new EP, Spiritually Balding.

Playful synth squiggles quickly disappear as a menacing guitar-forward lengthening takes hold. An active rhythm section complements the hazy guitars and laid-back vocals, cautioning “don’t try to fuck with the system.” Leaders of shams, victims of a scam, and beyond are explored with societal perspective, stirring particularly as the haunting vocals ask “don’t you know how to tell a lie?” — immersing alongside a hypnotic range of blaring guitars and steady rhythmic propulsions. “A Little off The Top” is an inventive, rousing success that kicks off a stellar EP.
