Binding Spell – “I Want To”

/

Balancing lush vocals and hazy guitar textures within shoegaze and dream-pop reminiscences, “I Want To” is the latest single from Binding Spell. The Washington, D.C.-based project of Roger Poulin first caught our ears in July with the track “Euphoria,” and “I Want To” is a continuation of that success.

A wall of fuzzy guitars traverse into a moody bass line, emitting a nocturnal post-punk appeal. “Sunday morning hit,” the vocals let out, aptly aligning with the contemplative, easy-going guitar pulses. A bass-y pulse and ascending vocal chill drives into glistening guitar-laden beauty as the title-touting refrain hits — “I want to, I do.” “I Want To” is another strong, serene rock showing from Binding Spell.

Poulin elaborates on the track: “This is a personal one – about growing apart and losing touch with a friend who was formative in the development of my music taste (and the Binding Spell sound, especially on this track), and never reconnecting before they were gone for good.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Best of December 2023’ Spotify playlist.
