Great Howl – “Tower”

/

Traversing from murky distortion into a triumphantly clear folk-pop soaring, “Tower” is a moving new single from Great Howl, an 8-piece based in Austin, Texas. The project arose in 2022, formed by by singer/songwriter Matt Mossman. A variety of Austin-based songwriters and musicians joined thereafter, including Kate Heron, Spencer Carter (Gilded Lows), Pat Miller (Blair Might), and members of the Minor Mishap Marching Band.

Brassy ruminations and a foreboding atmospheric direction venture into the stirring vocal presence. Effervescent strums build into momentum-filled percussion and clearer brass integrations, as lyrics evoke a sense of change and momentum. “When you fall from your tower, we will erase your name,” the vocals let out, bolstered by a weep-y string presence into the rousing “when the insects become wingless,” ardency. Poetic lyrical prowess and a climactic folk-driven arsenal enamor throughout the enthralling “Tower.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
