Smoltz – “Holding Out”

/

A contemplative rock sound takes hold on “Holding Out,” a compelling new single from Smoltz, the project of Brooklyn-based songwriter Zach Hinkle (who also performs under the moniker Desert Blonde).

Tranquil guitar tones and sporadic piano touches lead into a solemn vocal lead, emitting a subdued sort of grunge/rock/shoegaze intertwining that shows aptly with its “stare into space,” lyrical output. “The sirens are coming and going,” the vocals further during a psychedelic swirl of phasing effects. “Tell yourself to wait it out,” they continue thereafter, settling into the tranquility of the initial guitar/piano warmness. Multi-layered vocal enthusiasm pairs with textured guitar distortion in the final segment, showcasing a sturdy alt-rock expanse into the track’s riveting conclusion.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
