Dead Links – “Waves (Checking Out)”

/

Melding alt-country and freak-folk within a successfully surreal Western soundscape, “Waves (Checking Out)” is a recent track from Dead Links. The project of Cleveland-based artist Luke Evans excels with a narrative-friendly folk appeal, with shades of Magnetic Fields in the engaging lyrical drives and quaint yet impactful hooks.

“We met a hotel, in a desert town,” the vocals set the scene amidst steady acoustics and clap-laden percussion. “There aren’t that many people I’m drawn, and you have a key to room 102,” they continue, chronicling a unique relationship — in a certain scene and time — that’s memorable in its thematic and melodic unveilings. The alt-country first half builds grippingly into a sating freak-folk finale.

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
