Canadian singer-songwriter Andrew Shier embraces a rootsy folk and Americana approach on “Rusted and Weathered,” the first single from his forthcoming EP Bluebell. Following years in indie-rock settings, Shier handles most of the instrumentation and production himself, with lead guitar from Joseph Martel and drums by Rhys Lintern.
“This town’s only got a little room, one church with a hole in the roof,” Shier’s descriptive lyricism pairs with solemn acoustics. “People come but they leave too soon, so if you don’t need me then I don’t need you,” his lead presence resonates into a twangy electric guitar addition and steady percussion. A title-bearing performance soaring takes hold thereafter, consuming in its heightened emotion, alongside Martel’s lead guitar additions and Lintern’s hypnotic drumming.
“Crooked cops with crooked, if it don’t feel right then it needs to go,” Shier’s delivery continues to compel, driving to another melodic chorus with backing harmonic layers and touches of serene piano amidst the twangy guitars. “Maybe things can change,” a hopeful uplifting follows, with the yearning ardor then progressing into a return to rootsy folk spaciousness, in the “door’s open” phrasing. “Rusted and weathered, they’ve always been tethered…” a resonating final entry of the chorus captivates, capped off by tender guitar lines as the track comes to a satiating close. Shining in its folk and Americana cohesion, “Rusted and Weathered” is a wholly memorable success from Andrew Shier.
