Derev – “Tides of Time”

Evolving from serene folk into a rousing prog-rock expanse, “Tides of Time” is a consuming new track from Toronto-based band Derev. Their upcoming album Troubled Mind releases on March 26th, and “Tides of Time” represents its third single. Derev’s drummer Michel Karakach wrote the song, inspired by his experience of leaving his hometown. Specifically, it explores the mental trap that is cognitive immobility — where one recreates moments from their past, rendering themselves stuck in a place that isn’t reality.

“Leaving my hometown in Syria at the age of 25, after having built so many wonderful friendships, memories, and experiences was a struggle I never knew I’d have to deal with until I did,” Karakach explains. “Finding myself reminiscing over and over about my past life inspired me to write about it as a form of therapy. I never knew this was an actual mental diagnosis until I did some research on it.”

Lush guitar layers begin “Tides of Time,” evolving quickly into pit-pattering percussion and an introspective vocal prowess. Lyrical references to loneliness compel alongside dreamy guitar intrigue, attaining more clarity past the two-minute turn as accounts of being “trapped inside your own shell,” consume. A gripping sense of catharsis arrives thereafter. “Let the rain wash away the scars of memories,” vocals exude powerfully amidst a more intensified rock swell — punctuated by a scorching guitar solo in the final minute. “Tides of Time” is an enveloping, emotively impactful success from Derev.
