Knife Emoji have us firmly anticipating their upcoming album with a handful of its recently released singles. “Eastern Wind (Pt. 1)” struts a soaring vibrancy in its psych-inclined rock and pop melding, while “Doppelgang” unveils a haunting folk-laden intrigue. The latter exudes a chilly soundscape in its trickling guitars and unsettling textural buzzes, arriving seamlessly into the “heard it all before,” refrain and wordless ghostliness at mid-point; the track’s progression from solemn folk into soaring vocal emotion plays with cathartic impact.
Meanwhile, the album’s first single in “Eastern Wind (Pt. 1)” is exemplary of the band’s dynamic tonal reach. “Cut your fingertips,” the vocals exude into a bouncy bass briskness and infectious rhythmic pulse, then immersing in a mixture of halted prog-friendly momentum and contagious bounciness. Showcasing a capacity for both inventive soundscapes and hooky immediacy, Knife Emoji thoroughly consume on these two tracks.
