My Glass World – ‘Stranded Assets’

Strutting an enveloping sound propelled by a range of intoxicating rhythms and saxophone incorporations, Stranded Assets is the fantastic new album from My Glass World, the London-based duo of Jamie Telford and Sean Read. Three of the album tracks caught our ears the past year — “Compassion for Animals,” “You Can Feel It Coming,” and “Words.” The rest of Stranded Assets continues to showcase the project’s penchant for riveting, stylish productions — ranging from the sweltering brass-forward “Show Up” to the grooving funk-laden “Take Me Up.”

Amongst the album’s many highlights, “Show Up” kicks into gear with a debonair rhythmic pulse that quickly complements a soaring, charismatic saxophone outpouring. “Show me up and tell me what you want from me,” a suave vocal proclamation commences, furthered in intensity by spurts of saxophone and string-touched mystique. The act’s structures often rise cohesively from debonair, understated charm into more enthused emotion, and “Show Up” is one such example. The ensuing “Always Another Train” touts a more late-night feeling, expanding into a title-touting vibrancy that reminds of more opportunities, and perhaps better fortunes, ahead.

Soulful backing vocals, glimmering organs, and smooth saxophone adorn the lovely “Take Me Up,” also bolstered by spacey synth infusions at mid-point into the lead vocal urgings to “wake me up.” My Glass World enamor across various spectrums — from the funky to soulful and dreamily inviting — and it’s on full display throughout Stranded Assets, an artful and sophisticated success that continues to showcase the duo as top-tier songwriters and performers.

“Show Up” and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
