Chicago-based trio The Buddyrevelles craft a hooky, guitar-driven rock appeal on their new EP, The Concession. Following up last year’s The Consolation EP, The Concession achieves an engaging rock immediacy alongside moving lyrical contemplation — here exploring themes that capture the dynamic range of human amotions — from joy to grief and anger.
“Peabo” opens the EP with strongly melodic momentum. Lyrical references to past mistakes arrive into a more optimistic “somebody we might just wait for,” radiance — hinting at a brighter future with hooky power-pop charm. “Charlie’s Theme” casts a darker intrigue with its twanging guitars and alternation between moody croons and spoken-word “inside, outside,” pacing. The “aftermath,” sequence enthralls in the brisker vocal immersion and clanging guitar tones.
The ensuing “Twenty Dollars in a Card Means That Somebody Cares for You” melds introspective vocal prowess — “the key is not to be the type that only waits around,” — with breezy guitar/bass interplay for another replay-inducing impact, while “Crooked from the Start” concludes the EP with a heartfelt rise from tender guitars into a rousing rock ardency. Full of excellent songwriting, The Concession is a memorable success from The Buddyrevelles.
