VASILIKÍ – “Vanilla Sky”

A consuming production with dynamic appeal — from spacey synths to twangy guitars and string-laden mystique — “Vanilla Sky” is a thorough success from VASILIKÍ, an artist originally from Athens, Greece and now based in NYC. She first caught our ears last summer with the magnetic re-imagining of Modern Talking’s “Cheri Cheri Lady.”

Playful synths and dreamy vocals ring out a throwback stylishness, strutting an ’80s dance-pop flair. Moody guitar tones invoke shades of post-punk, while the “you have moved on” vocal admissions thereafter compel within a galloping pop allure; it doesn’t take long for the production to unveil its eclectic, immersive qualities. The remainder of the track stirs with its orchestral flourishes, steady electro-pop pulse, and soaring vocal work. “Vanilla Sky” is another piece of very impressive songwriting from VASILIKÍ.

VASILIKÍ elaborates on the track:

“I wrote ‘Vanilla Sky” a few years back in my New York bedroom studio. The song reflects on the universal human need for connection, and describes how loneliness can persist even when you’re surrounded by others. At the same time how some people are comfortable being alone because they have somehow managed to truly, deeply love themselves – therefore don’t look for someone else to fill the void or to complete them.”

This and other tracks featured this month can be streamed on the updating Obscure Sound’s ‘Emerging Singles’ Spotify playlist.
