Yes We Are – ‘Into This Garden’ EP

Minneapolis-based duo Yes We Are enamor across Into This Garden, a debut EP that thematically navigates from solitude to connection amidst lushly evolving pop and folk charms. Across its five tracks, immersive instrumentation and melodic vocals — led by singer-songwriter Dylan Bode — pair introspection with uplifting, nature-infused energy. From the rain-kissed melancholy of opener “Where Is Love?” to the anthemic, self-affirming ascent of “Arrow,” the EP artfully explores themes of identity, belonging, and the quiet power of connection.

Originally written by Lionel Bart for the musical Oliver!, the duo’s rendition of “Where Is Love?” opens the EP with immersive allure, weaving sounds of rain with somber string arrangements. Melancholic introspection flows seamlessly into elegant piano tones and a title-bearing vocal questioning. “Is it underneath the willow tree, that I’ve been dreaming of?” Bode sings with heartrending grace, as gentle piano pulses and stirring strings swell into a theatrical, cathartic finale. It’s a fantastic reimagining, aesthetically recalling a cross between Rufus Wainwright and Plush.

The ensuing “Ladybug” continues to infuse nature-friendly ambience and lyrical imagery, encouraging listeners to stop and “take it in” as bird-chirping and fluttering acoustics intermingle. Initial pushes to “dance and play outside in the leaves” — rather than wallowing in present tumults — further a celebration of free-spirited escapism, set within swaying trees, sunshine, and other non-judgmental aspects of nature. “Daisy” ensues with stomping rhythms, shimmering guitars, and beckoning vocals, capturing a blissful state in its “call me Daisy” hook alongside depictions of rainbows and sprawling fields.

“Arrow” is another highlight, excelling with a punchy new-wave styling that blends booming bass and nostalgic synths. The “lose the world for a moment” lyricism continues compelling themes of valuing oneself and the present moment, rather than stresses that may loom ahead. Its encouraging, anthemic ascent stirs in its push to shed self-doubt. Finale “Into This Garden” delights with a solemn, organ-laden glow, as Bode’s gorgeous vocals emit feelings of renewal and perseverance. A closing vocal sample — wishing for the world to be a kinder place — resonates as the track swells to a soaring, cathartic close. Full of emotive, melodic songwriting, Into This Garden is a standout debut from Yes We Are.

The EP releases on November 14th.
