An absorbing new single from NYC-based singer-songwriter Alwyn Morrison, “Maybe In Another World” intertwines melodic acoustics, piano, and orchestral touches with themes of heartbreak. One of many highlights on the artist’s new EP, Heartsplit, the track is affecting in its diary-like lyricism and evident emotion. It also features a variety of talented artists. “I wrote it with my friend Michael Kooman, and we teamed up with producer Michael Carey (Gwen Stefani, Robbie Williams) and mixer Alex Aldi (The Goo Goo Dolls, Passion Pit),” Morrison says. Grammy and Tony nominee August Eriksmoen (Only Murders in the Building) also arranged the track.
An emotive lyrical disposition compels right away, shifting between smitten adoration and somber realizations of heartbreak. “No one ever held my hand like you,” Morrison’s smooth vocals let out amidst prancing acoustics. “Or my shattered heart in a million pieces too,” he continues as twinkling piano additions appear, showing that melancholic side — though also a palpable appreciation for the relationship that transpired, nonetheless.
“Baby it was magic, baby it was love,” Morrison sings during the magnetic chorus, bolstered further by majestic string-laden backings. The ensuing “maybe in another time,” contemplations continue to engage with sincerity and thoughtfulness, accepting the relationship as ending with harmonious, loving qualities — and opening for the possibility if it renewing again in another life or world. “Maybe In Another World” is a moving, successful piece of songwriting from Alwyn Morrison.
