Eyal Erlich – “Sentimental Magic Cape – Live”

Tel Aviv-based singer-songwriter Eyal Erlich continues to impress with The Live Sessions, a series capturing his music in live form at the storied Levontin venue. Rooted in the spirit of classic ’70s rock and also shaped by a late-blooming artistic path and sincere emotional perspective, Erlich’s music is supported here by Omer Hershman, Adi Gigi, and Barak Kram. The enthralling performance of “Sentimental Magic Cape” distills his hallmark mix of raw rock textures, reflective lyricism, and memorable stage presence.

Erlich also caught our ears with his magnetic live presence last month with “All in all,” and now delights here again with his performance of “Sentimental Magic Cape.”

A bouncy bass current, a brief flash of guitars, and percussive pit-pattering open the performance with artful momentum — culminating in a tender, suave twanging guitar line that coexists harmoniously within the tight rhythm section. Omer Hershman’s trickling guitar work delights in its free-flowing spirit, while Adi Gigi’s bass and Barak Kram’s drums play the role of precision and familiarity. A vocal count-up then builds into Erlich’s smooth croon with replay-inducing vigor.

“I tried to fly and put it on… but no, I can’t escape,” his vocals let out, tonally resembling a fun cross between Elvis Costello and Blur. The title-bearing vocal soaring past the three-minute turn also invigorates, driving to a wholly satiating finale. “Sentimental Magic Cape” is another thoroughly inviting display of both musicianship and melodic immediacy from Eyal Erlich.
