A riveting new EP from Jhon Allan, PURE ILLUSION immerses with a dynamic array of sounds — enamoring across alt-pop, R&B, rock, and soul. Alongside the melodic songwriting is lyricism capturing the turbulence of a transformative year — exploring themes of loss, fractured relationships, self-discovery, and the search for authenticity.
“This EP is like a mirror of all parts of my life over the past year – the beautiful and the chaotic,” Allan explains. “It’s a journey through life’s illusions and an exploration of what’s real, for me, for you, and for us, for better or worse. It’s the most honest thing I’ve ever done – an attempt to break through the facades and find something genuine.”
Opening track “BROTHER” enthralls in its array of trickling guitars and powerful vocal soaring, fondly reminiscent of Radiohead in its haunting vocal elongation and evolving guitar work — bolstered by sporadic touches of piano. “Don’t ask me how I feel,” Allan’s vocals let out during an especially memorable sequence, with the “letting go of the echoes of the past” lyricism furthering a heartfelt lyrical entrancement, capturing a deteriorated friendship. Ensuing track “PURE” consumes as well, showcasing the project’s dynamic tonal chops in its seamless rise from gentle folk intrigue and whoo-ing vocal lushness into rousing fervor; its stylish ascent reminds of King Krule.
Another standout track, “MAJOR CONTEST” is a charismatic soul-pop thriller — complete with vintage synth crawls, jangling guitar dreaminess, and punchy R&B vocal charisma. The wide-varying vocal pitches move into a “keep moving” infectiousness, resembling a production from Tyler, The Creator. Capping it all off is EP finale “Sights,” a thorough delight in its soulful nostalgia and smitten lyrical proclamations. “You blow my mind,” ardent vocals recollect on fateful first meetings, then sending chills as the blaring synths shift into a piano-forward build-up, culminating in a triumphant expressiveness. PURE ILLUSION is a stellar showcase in songwriting and production from Jhon Allan.
