English composer Matthew Peter Gough introduces “Buttercup Field,” the first release from his new project “The Piano Field” — a series that will lead into a full-length album arriving in spring 2026. Working from his seaside studio in Frinton-on-Sea, Gough channels the tranquility of his surroundings into a piano-driven piece that feels both intimate and expansive. Known previously for his BabyGoodnight lullaby works, here he reveals a more cinematic and expressive side of his artistry.
The track’s release comes alongside a beautiful music video, directed by Amelia Armstrong. Lovely imagery, of flowers and outdoor greenery, is complemented by Gough’s piano performance in the middle of a field. It captures the track’s natural, no-frills beauty — imparting an enjoyably contemplative sound, ideal for meadow-set relaxation.
“Buttercup Field” commences with a lushly absorbing piano presence, melding a bright lead and enchantingly subdued countermelody. There’s an ethereal, weightless charm to the consistent sound — both in tone and tempo. Plucky strings then enter as the final minute approaches, as do other instrumental elements — adding an orchestral elegance to the soundscape and bolstering its gorgeousness even further.
From its more minimalist piano-laden beginnings — full of wonderment and charm — to the second half’s orchestral additions, “Buttercup Field” resonates as a stirring piece of songwriting and piano-driven performance from Matthew Peter Gough.
