Sophie Penman – “Albert Street”

/

Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Sophie Penman returns after a two-year hiatus with the memorable new single “Albert Street,” achieving a soulfully introspective folk appeal in its standout production. The track takes inspiration from long walks through Edinburgh, with lyricism capturing the unique beauty of revisiting once-overlooked places and re-connecting with past memories — in Penman’s case rooted in the city of Edinburgh and Scotland’s spacious landscapes.

A warming and steady rhythm section, comprising drummer Ryan Thrupp and bassist Duncan Penman, moves seamlessly into Sophie’s magnetic piano work and soulful vocal captivation. “That’s when you stole my heart,” she lets out with debonair captivation, with the “down by the water” scene-setting furthering the retrospective, vivid allure. Harmonious, colorful “how I miss those days in the sun” yearning follows, absolutely delightful in its vibrant instrumentation and expressive vocal enjoyment.

“You took a photo of me, down on Albert Street,” the next series of verses begin, the past-tense element joining into remembrances of those “days in the sun” for a sense of smitten remembrance. The accounts of cloudy weather, following the departure of a loved one, are conveyed with artful immersion — as tasteful instrumentation complements Penman’s strong vocal work, for a stirringly replay-inducing success of a track.
