British-Armenian songwriter and producer Ripsime reintroduces her fantastic early work with the re-releases of tracks “Dare,” “Colours of Your Eyes,” and “I’ll Understand” — also marking the launch of her own imprint, RIP Records. The tracks meld folk, rock, and electronic textures with cinematic vocals, showcasing her fearless, evolving artistry, and hinting at the bold, immersive soundscapes of her upcoming work.
All three tracks consume with a powerful, melodic sound. “Dare” is a stellar example of Ripsime’s knack for climatic structural unfolding, building upon a booming bass bounce and strumming acoustics as debonair vocals let out that “it’s easy to walk away without a goodbye.” Warming guitar jangles infuse seamlessly thereafter, as the sporadic vocal feeling swells from lush nonchalance to an emotive, chilly blast of ardor. The final minute is especially gripping, with magnetic vocal layers persisting into the ghostly finale.
“Colours of Your Eyes” is another gem, strutting a dreamier intrigue to start as wordless vocals and retro-minded guitar glistening combine — casting a cinematic, Lynchian glow. A spoken-word, meditative vocal presence emerges, gradually assuming a haunting croon into the gorgeous title-bearing refrain. “I feel like I’m walking through,” the mesmerizing vocals exude, asking “when will this pain go away?” as enthralling strings enter. Further atmospheric spaciousness and impactful vocals stir on “I’ll Understand,” embracing a stripped-down folk power into a soulful vocal quivering. All three re-released tracks are fantastic, and provide an excellent entry point into Ripsime’s consuming songwriting.
