Hallucinophonics – “Afternoon of Acid Rain”

//

London-based project Hallucinophonics craft a vivid, kaleidoscopic psych-rock experience on new single “Afternoon of Acid Rain.” The track moves through a landscape of absurdist imagery, populated by candy corn girls and fire-filled clouds, while exploring the fluid nature of identity. By setting a confrontational “who in the hell do you think you are?” hook against a backdrop of jangly psych-pop harmoniousness, the project ultimately finds a warm, communal resolution in the face of existential chaos. The track is also accompanied by a fully animated music video, which brings the track’s surreal cast of characters to life.

“It was an afternoon of acid rain,” a haunting vocal presence exudes, hazily enticing in its descriptions of foggy clouds drifting prior to a momentum-filled ardor. “And then they came to me and said ‘who in the hell do you think you are?'” a spirited, layered vocal timelessness emerges there, the swell of subdued textures and thumping rhythms maintaining a delectable throwback psych-pop charm. “There was love everywhere,” the vocals continue as the instrumentation continues to complement and expand; jangly guitars and melodic vocals gear up into another “who in the hell” hook, inducing replays in its fervent uptick and seamless expanse.

“So come on in, friend, the water’s fine,” a haunting vocal mystique kickstarts an especially enchanting sequence, developing from frolicking, nocturnal guitar chiming into a burst of colorfully melodic charisma as a gripping guitar solo enters the fray. “And then they came to me,” another riveting chorus emerges, for a final, satiating time. Free-flowing guitars and thumping rhythms then maneuver into a wonderfully satisfying outro. “Afternoon of Acid Rain” is another classic-sounding standout from Hallucinophonics.

Alongside the standard music video, the project has also started rolling out a fully 3D spatial music video specifically designed for Apple Vision Pro users. Per the act: “It allows listeners to literally step inside the song’s surreal narrative and fully surrender to the trip.” Check it out here.
