West London trio Patience Please showcase stadium-ready hooks and sincere emotion on their debut EP, Miles Away. The record spans from the Britpop-inspired vocal grandeur of “Wasting Time” to the sparkling, acoustic-led energy of “Miracle.” The result is a confident display of sharp songwriting that bridges vibrant guitar textures with anthemic pop accessibility.
Opening the EP, “Wasting Time” compels in its quick evolution from understated, starry-eyed jangling into an eruption of warming distortion. “I had all the right intentions, I tried to look the other way,” the ensuing vocals stir, navigating amidst serene rock/pop allure with soul-igniting lyrical admissions. The “you wasted my time” hook follows, absorbing in its anthemic vocal theatrics — showing shades of Suede, enjoyably, in the vocal tone. Subsequent track “Miles Away” succeeds similarly, maneuvering from peppy initial energy to the “I could see you coming” exultation, its pulses of guitars and fervent vocals inducing replays; its rumbling “hoping to find you” bridge also excels.
The EP consistently delights in its quality songwriting, ranging from the previously featured gem “Madelaine” and its vulnerable string-laden entrancement, to the magnetic “Miracle.” The latter envelops in its playful bass line and shimmering acoustics, moving from an Aztec Camera-esque beginning to an impassioned coming-to-terms vocal soaring. The track diversifies well between its jangly commencing emotion and approachable central hook — “waiting on a miracle.” Full of melodic excellence, Miles Away is a stellar EP from Patience Please.
