DADDY DRWG – “Black Thread”

DADDY DRWG, the solo project of Welsh songwriter Richard Proctor, delivers a dark, brooding alternative anti-ballad with “Black Thread.” Blending dynamic guitars, late-night bass, and slow-burning indie rock tension, the masterfully layered track turns inward to examine psychological weight, failing relationships, and the haunting, inescapable lingering of depression.

Solemn guitar twangs and a moody bass line get the track underway, met by calming vocal introspection, tonally reminiscent of Timber Timbre. “White flag on a black desk. All those coffee stains and no purpose,” Proctor’s vocals let out, steadily escalating into a multi-layered, more emotive delivery as jangly guitars and pulsing rhythms craft a throwback-friendly, guitar-pop appeal. Spacey synth infusions subtly adorn the ensuing verses, culminating in the personal declaration: “I don’t want to talk no more / You keep calling.”

“You’re a black thread, running through my daylight,” his vocals continue, with the depictions of “tangled in your outline” being artfully reflective of someone lingering in your head, persisting with their presence no matter how much you try to distract yourself. A soaring, resonant guitar solo follows that memorable sequence, then moving back into Proctor’s more debonair vocal feeling and a satisfying overall send-off. “Black Thread” is a wholly impactful, melodic success from DADDY DRWG.
