Empty Machines – “Vicious Vulture”

Glasgow-based Scottish artist Thomas Crawford channels his multi-genre Empty Machines project into new track “Vicious Vulture,” featuring the haunting vocals of Jodie Helena. The track frames predatory lyricism with a brooding guitar intro, eventually erupting into a massive, cinematic wall of sound driven by fuzzy distortion and theatrical strings.

Moody, late-night guitar jangles open the track with enveloping intrigue, artfully driving into Jodie Helena’s dreamy vocal allure. “Snarling at your pride. Vicious vulture, ferociously in flight,” she lets out, gearing up thereafter into a commanding combination of fuzzy guitar distortion and theatrical strings. “Cruel form of life,” her riveting vocals continue, then falling seamlessly back into the moodier verses, where lyrical accounts of “see the duckling, delicate and sly” contrast with the descriptions of a “vicious vulture” and its ferocious flight.

Further ominous entrancement shows in the “permission to destroy all life” vocals, where the strings linger with a fervent glow before erupting into another “cruel form of life” refrain. A gripping bridge follows, where the vocals let out an anguished frustration — “tired of beating hearts in this world, to the one and only god inside,” — before a spine-tingling string entry comes into view, concluding the track with a mixture of stylish haunts and infectious vigor. “Vicious Vulture” is a standout single from Empty Machines.
