Kai Moa – “(Sea)”

Kai Moa’s excellent debut single, “(Sea)” blends ambient mystique with detailed IDM electronics. Chilly keys and sweeping synths guide the track into soulful vocals and outdoor samples, before closing with whale songs that mirror the isolating, stormy doldrums of modern dating. The result is a thorough success of a debut from the Birmingham, England-based artist.

A beautifully hypnotic introduction consumes in its expanding soundscape. A glimmering ambient intrigue opens the track, as illuminated keys swell gradually alongside hazy synths. Warming glimpses of percussion show past the first minute, combining with the keys for a blissfully caressing sound. The spacey synth pads escalate with artful cohesion as the midpoint approaches, shifting in and out of prominence, and assuming an arpeggiated allure in the second half. Soulful vocal additions further the intoxicating mix, as do the jungle-like effects that emanate, resembling bird calls within a forest.

A particularly resonant outro unveils as we hear the sound of whales singing to each other, echoing themes of feeling adrift and stuck in the sea — where aquatic animals swim freely — and also the overall perils of dating. From the stirring vocal work to the grippingly atmospheric interplay of keys and synths, “(Sea)” is an artfully accomplished track from Kai Moa, showing a fantastic ability to craft immersive soundscapes alongside impactful themes.
