A warm singer-songwriter pop take on Cheap Trick’s “I Want You To Want Me,” Virginia-based multi-award-winning guitarist and artist Lisa Lim succeeds thoroughly with this unplugged cover. Part of her Songs of My Youth series, the organic reinterpretation transforms Cheap Trick’s rock anthem into an acoustic-driven display featuring Beatles-inspired harmonies, expressive vocals, and a lively approachability.
A climactic production stirs on this memorable interpretation, spanning from breezy acoustic strums to a more expanded pop-rock vigor with added rhythms and harmonious vocal layers. “I’d love you to love me,” Lim’s palpable vocal yearning lets out alongside a soft emergence of twinkling piano. An uptick in vibrancy ensues in the “didn’t I see you cryin’?” questioning, melodically inviting as serene vocal reflections and clap-laden rhythms add a playfully enchanting quality. “I’d get home early from work, if you say that you love me,” Lim’s vocals shine during the bridge, as well — finding a middle ground between moody and effervescent.
Rollicking, fun guitar work enamors as the track’s final minute arrives, with a subsequent vocal spaciousness charming amidst elegant piano and muted acoustic strums. A final touch of harmonious vocal backings and clap-forward enthusiasm then traverses to a tender guitar-forward send-off, concluding an excellent cover of “I Want You To Want Me” by Lisa Lim.
